Without regular inspection and upkeep, gaps form, armoring displaces, and the shoreline beneath begins to erode — often invisibly until a storm surge exposes the damage. A revetment is a sloped facing of rock, concrete, or engineered material placed along a shoreline to absorb wave energy and prevent erosion of the underlying bank. Unlike a vertical seawall, a revetment uses the slope and mass of its armor layer to dissipate wave energy rather than reflect it. Over time, revetments need maintenance: stones shift or settle, voids open in the filter fabric, toe scour undermines the base, and vegetation encroachment weakens the armor system.
We inspect the revetment from the water and land sides, documenting displaced armor, visible voids, toe scour depth, filter fabric condition, and any bank erosion behind or beneath the armoring.
We probe under displaced stone sections and along the toe to identify voids in the gravel filter layer or bedding fabric that indicate active sub-surface erosion.
Where toe scour has undermined the base of the revetment, we restore the toe by placing additional riprap or grouted stone to re-establish the toe key depth.
Displaced armor stones are repositioned and any stones that have degraded below required size are replaced with new material of matching gradation.
Where voids exist in the filter gravel layer, we place compatible gravel to fill gaps. Where filter fabric is torn or bypassed, we repair or replace the geotextile fabric.
We restore any displaced or degraded crest stones and address vegetation encroachment that may be undermining the armor-to-bank interface.
