When repair isn't enough — when a deteriorated timber bulkhead needs replacement, or a new waterfront property needs its first shoreline protection — Seawall Repairs by Solid Foundations builds high-quality wood bulkheads engineered to last. We use marine-grade treated lumber and pressure-treated pilings specified for saltwater and freshwater environments, with construction methods that meet Florida's coastal building codes.
A wood bulkhead (also called a timber bulkhead or wood retaining wall) is a shoreline protection structure built from marine-grade timber or pressure-treated lumber. Vertical timber sheets are driven into the soil along the waterline, held in place by horizontal walers and tiebacks (or deadman anchors) buried in the soil behind the wall. Wood bulkheads are traditional along Florida's rivers, bays, and canal systems, and when properly built with modern marine-grade materials, they last 20–35 years.
We survey the shoreline, assess soil conditions, and design the bulkhead system including pile depth, waler sizing, and tieback spacing.
We obtain all required county and state permits before construction begins — typically 3–6 weeks for standard residential bulkhead permits.
Marine-grade treated timber or vinyl sheet piles are driven to design depth using a vibratory or impact hammer mounted on a barge or land-based equipment.
Horizontal walers (structural timbers running parallel to the waterline) are bolted to the piling face to tie the system together.
Steel tie rods connect the waler system to deadman anchors or helical tiebacks buried in stable soil behind the wall.
The wall is backfilled with clean fill material and a concrete or timber cap is installed at the top of the structure.
Wood bulkhead installation typically costs $200–$450 per linear foot for materials and installation, depending on bulkhead height, soil conditions, and site accessibility. A typical 75-foot residential bulkhead runs $15,000–$35,000 fully installed and permitted.
