Hydrostatic pressure — water pressure building up behind your seawall — is one of the leading causes of seawall cracking, bowing, and failure. Relief drains are small-diameter pipes installed through the seawall panel at the correct height to allow groundwater to equalize naturally with the water on the other side, eliminating the pressure differential that causes structural stress. At Seawall Repairs by Solid Foundations, we install marine-grade relief drain systems engineered to last decades without clogging.
A seawall relief drain is a perforated or slotted pipe installed horizontally through the seawall panel, positioned at the correct height to allow groundwater behind the wall to drain freely when tide levels are lower than the groundwater level. Properly positioned relief drains prevent the hydrostatic pressure differential that pushes seawalls outward, cracks panels, and breaks tie rods. Most older seawalls were built without relief drains, or the original drains have become clogged with sediment over decades of use.
We measure the hydrostatic head (pressure differential) at multiple points along your seawall during different tide stages to determine the optimal relief drain placement height.
We core-drill through the seawall panel at the calculated optimal height — typically 6–18 inches above the normal water line — using marine-grade diamond-core drill equipment.
A Schedule 40 or Schedule 80 PVC sleeve with a marine-grade end cap and filter screen is installed in each core, preventing sediment infiltration while allowing water flow.
Relief drains are typically spaced 8–12 feet apart along the wall length. We space them to achieve even pressure distribution across the entire panel system.
If your seawall has existing but clogged relief drains, we clean them with a hydraulic flush rather than drilling new ones where possible — saving time and cost.
Relief drain installation costs $150–$400 per drain including core drilling, sleeve installation, and filter cap. A standard 80-foot seawall typically needs 7–10 drains, making total relief drain installation $1,000–$4,000 — one of the most cost-effective seawall maintenance investments available.
