A Bradenton rock revetment should be inspected every year and after each tropical storm, so displaced stone and undercut toes are fixed before the riverbank or bay shore behind them erodes.

A revetment is a stone-armored slope instead of a vertical wall: large armor stone on the surface, smaller stone beneath, and filter fabric against the soil. Waves and current lose energy as they work up and across the rock. The catch is that rock can move. Storms, tidal flow, and wake gradually loosen the interlock, and gaps let the soil behind start to wash out.

Ends go first, because water concentrates and swirls around them.
| When | What we look for |
|---|---|
| Spring, before June 1 | Full inspection; reset loose stone; fix fabric |
| After each named storm | Displaced armor, toe scour, end washouts |
| After heavy rain events on the river | Runoff and current damage along riverbank slopes |
| Annually | Slope profile, vegetation, transitions |
In 2024 the post-storm row mattered three times over. Manatee County reports that Debby, Helene, and Milton each brought surge to the county within about ten weeks (Manatee County recovery plan). A slope weakened by one storm had no time to be fixed before the next arrived.
A revetment on open Palma Sola Bay mostly fights waves. One on the Manatee River or a tributary like the Braden River or Wares Creek also deals with current, both from the tide and from freshwater running downstream after heavy rain. Milton, for example, dropped more than 13 inches of rain at Bradenton. Current tends to attack the toe and the downstream end of a slope rather than the top, so river revetments often look fine from the lawn while the bottom row is being undercut. We check the toe at low water on every river visit. Where we find the downstream end starting to unravel, adding a heavier row of stone there often stops the problem before it spreads up the slope.
Revetment maintenance in Bradenton typically costs $1,500โ$5,000 per year for a standard 100-foot residential revetment. Major rehabilitation runs $150โ$400 per linear foot. Regular upkeep is far cheaper than rebuilding a neglected slope.

With any exposed fabric or soil, then the toe. Surface stones can be reset after the base is secure.
Maintenance within the existing footprint is often simpler than new work, but work in the water may still need approval. We confirm with the city or county and state agencies first.
Transitions concentrate water. A proper tie-in fixes it; more loose rock usually doesn't.
Decades, as long as the toe stays protected and the fabric stays covered.
