A Sarasota rock revetment should be walked at least once a year and again after every named storm, so displaced stone, torn fabric, and scoured toes get fixed before the bank behind them starts to slump.

A revetment is a sloped rock shoreline: large armor stone over smaller bedding rock and filter fabric. Instead of reflecting waves like a vertical wall, it lets them run up and spend their energy among the stones. That makes it tough, but not permanent. Surges, wakes, and seasonal high water all nudge stones out of place, and gaps grow if nobody resets them.

Transitions almost always fail first, because water curls around the end of the rock and digs behind it.
| When | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Spring, before June 1 | Full walk; reset loose stone; patch fabric |
| Within days of a named storm | Displaced armor, toe scour, end washouts |
| Late summer and fall high water | Washout along the high-water line |
| Every year | Slope profile, vegetation, joints with neighbors |
The 2024 season showed why the post-storm row matters. Helene and Milton arrived about two weeks apart, and NHC recorded surge inundation along the Sarasota coast from both (NHC Milton report). Stones loosened by the first storm had no time to be reset before the second.
It comes back to how armored the bay has become. With more than 80% of Sarasota Bay's shoreline hardened, according to the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program, waves that reach your rock have often already bounced off several walls. The rock is doing work that a natural shoreline used to share. Add storm surge and long fetches across open water on the bay side of the keys, and stones shift faster than they would in a quiet canal.
The upside: a revetment is exactly the kind of softer edge the City of Sarasota's 2025 seawall ordinance encourages. Keeping yours healthy is worth it.
Routine maintenance typically costs $1,500โ$5,000 per year for a standard 100-foot residential revetment. Major rehabilitation runs $150โ$400 per linear foot. Yearly care almost always costs less than rebuilding a neglected slope.
Rock revetments are among the structures Sarasota County permits under its Water and Navigation Control Authority code. Repair of an existing permitted structure typically fits the General Permit level; expanding or reshaping the revetment may need more (Sarasota County EPD). We check before any stone moves.

Within a few days if it's safe. 2024 showed that a second storm can follow quickly, and loose stone is much easier to reset before it's hit again.
A proper tie-in at the transition, not just more stone. Water is wrapping around the end, so the end needs to be shaped and keyed in.
Small hand-placed adjustments within the existing footprint are one thing. Anything involving equipment, new stone, or reshaping the slope should be permitted and done by a contractor.
We work around established mangroves and oyster growth. They help hold the shoreline together.
