Riprap is a sloped bed of large stone at the foot of a seawall or bank that soaks up wave energy, and on Sarasota Bay's heavily walled shoreline it's one of the most practical ways to protect a wall and add habitat at the same time.

Neither the City of Sarasota nor Sarasota County sets a blanket riprap mandate in the rules we reviewed. What you'll find instead is encouragement. The city's 2025 seawall ordinance asks owners to consider living-shoreline features and hybrid green-grey materials that add biological value to flat walls (City of Sarasota Sec. VII-1304). Rock at the toe is one of the simplest ways to do that.
Permits still apply. In unincorporated Sarasota County, rock revetments are one of the structures the Water and Navigation Control Authority permits, so placing stone waterward of your wall is not a do-it-yourself weekend job. Inside city limits, the city reviews it. State and federal authorization may also apply.

The Sarasota Bay Estuary Program estimates more than 80% of Sarasota Bay's shoreline is hardened. When nearly every lot has a vertical wall, waves and boat wake bounce back and forth between them instead of dying out on a beach or mangrove fringe. That reflected energy digs at the base of each wall, a process called scour.
Riprap helps by:
That last point is why the city and the estuary program keep pointing owners toward softer edges.
Where a new wall is going in anyway, it's cheaper to add rock during that same job. See bulkhead replacement in Sarasota.
Riprap in Sarasota typically runs $125โ$350 per linear foot. A standard 75-foot residential job is about $10,000โ$25,000, fully installed and permitted. Stone volume, water depth, and whether the rock arrives by land or by water all affect price.
Riprap in front of a wall is a supporting player; the wall still holds back the land. A revetment is a sloped rock shoreline that does the job on its own, with no vertical wall behind it. If you already have one, see revetment maintenance in Sarasota.
We also install riprap in Bradenton and St. Petersburg. The full list of what we do here is on our Sarasota seawall repair page.
It projects a few feet from the wall at the bottom. We shape it around your dock and lift so it doesn't interfere with docking.
We didn't find a citywide requirement. The city does encourage living-shoreline features on seawalls, and rock is a common way to add them.
Yes. Rock revetments fall under the county's Water and Navigation Control Authority permits, and state or federal approval may also be needed.
Properly sized stone on fabric stays put in most conditions. Major surge can shift some rock, so a quick check after a named storm is wise.
