Venice includes what locals call Venice Island, a part of the mainland reached by bridges over the artificially cut Intracoastal Waterway. Roberts Bay, named for an 1870s homesteader, lies along its waterfront. In 2024 Venice was close to the center of both major Gulf storms: Helene pushed several feet of surge through the city, and Milton made landfall just north at Siesta Key less than two weeks later. Milton was worse here. NHC reports 6 to 9 feet of inundation from Venice south to Boca Grande, and the sensor near the Venice Fishing Pier read 6.74 feet above mean higher high water, with notable waves on top. The highest sustained wind measured in Florida during Milton, 79 knots with a 93-knot gust, came from a University of Florida tower at Venice Beach, and NHC thinks the strongest winds came ashore a little north of that tower. For a wall, that combination means surge, waves, and wind-driven debris all in one night.
In March 2025, the city announced a 400-foot seawall on Tarpon Center Drive near the South Jetty, topped with surge-resistant glass to protect an evacuation route while keeping the water in view. The assistant city engineer put the cost at about $3 million, partly funded by an FDEP grant.
