Seawall Repair in Edgewater, FL

Edgewater runs along the Indian River North, right across from the head of Mosquito Lagoon. It was incorporated in 1915 as the Town of Hawks Park and took the name Edgewater in 1924. Today it's a city of about 23,000 people spread over 22.6 square miles, and almost all of that is land. Why Do Edgewater Walls Fail?

• Rain from behind. During Hurricane Ian in 2022, the National Hurricane Center recorded 21.49 inches of rain at Daytona Beach. It says flooding in Volusia's intracoastal communities came mostly from rainfall rather than surge, and it counts 40 county buildings destroyed and 1,378 damaged. When the ground behind a seawall is soaked, it pushes on the panels, and as it drains, it carries soil out through open joints.
• Shallow lagoon water. The Indian River Lagoon averages about four feet deep and moves more with wind than tide, according to the St. Johns River Water Management District. Wind can hold water high against the wall for days.
• Worn hardware. Older walls lose joint seals and filter fabric, and their steel tie rods corrode.

Common warning signs include a soft lawn near the wall, puddles that drain toward the cap, and seepage at low water.

What Repairs Fit an Edgewater Wall?

Who Handles Edgewater Seawall Permits?

Inside city limits, the City of Edgewater's Building and Permitting office issues the permit. Florida Statute 403.813 exempts restoring a seawall at its old location, upland of it, or within 18 inches waterward from a separate Chapter 403 permit. Mosquito Lagoon Aquatic Preserve is nearby, so work that goes farther out into state waters can draw more review from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. We handle the filings.
