Seawall Repair in Ponce Inlet, FL

Ponce Inlet is mostly water. The town covers 14.7 square miles, and 10.3 of them are water, on a peninsula between the Halifax River and the Atlantic at the tip of Ponce de Leon Inlet. The inlet was called Mosquito Inlet until 1926. It connects the south end of the Halifax River and the north end of Mosquito Lagoon to the ocean. The Ponce de Leon Inlet Light was finished in 1887, and the town was incorporated in 1963. Few places on this coast have walls exposed to so many different waters.

How Does Ponce Inlet Connect to Daytona Beach?

Ponce Inlet is part of the Halifax River corridor that our Daytona Beach seawall repair team leads. It's about nine miles south of Daytona, which handles permitting and scheduling for every town along this river.

What Makes Inlet-Area Walls Different?

• Tidal flow. The EPA's lagoon guide says tidal currents control mixing near inlets, while wind takes over farther away. Ponce Inlet walls sit where the river meets the ocean, so they see much more regular tidal movement than walls up the Halifax.
• Converging waters. The Halifax River joins Spruce Creek and Mosquito Lagoon just before reaching the inlet. Several flows meet at the town's shoreline.
• 2022 beach damage. Hurricane Nicole caused beach erosion that damaged beachfront structures at Wilbur-by-the-Sea, which the National Hurricane Center places just south of Daytona Beach. The state's emergency armoring order for Volusia runs from Amsden Road in Ormond Beach south to Inlet Harbor Road in Ponce Inlet.

On the river side, watch for scour at the toe, sand leaving through joints on a falling tide, and cracked caps near boat slips.

Who Permits Seawall Work in Ponce Inlet?

River walls inside town limits start with the town's Building & Permitting office. Florida Statute 403.813 exempts restoring a river wall at its old line or within 18 inches waterward from a separate Chapter 403 permit. Beachfront armoring is a state matter: Volusia County can only allow temporary emergency measures, and permanent seawalls need FDEP. Under the post-storm emergency order, rebuilds stay in their original footprint, caps can't be raised, and daily sea-turtle nest surveys are required.

Can Marina and Charter Bulkheads Be Repaired While Boats Stay?
