Riprap Installation in Key West, FL

Riprap is sloped rock placed at the foot of a seawall or shoreline to take the force of waves. In Key West, placing it means working with state, federal, and marine sanctuary rules, because the rock goes into protected water.

Is Riprap Required in Key West?

We haven't found a Key West rule that requires riprap at the base of every seawall, the way some Florida cities do. The more important question here is whether it's allowed where you want it, and on what terms.

Riprap goes waterward of the wall, into state waters that lie inside the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. That means:

  • State and federal review. Rock placed in the water generally needs FDEP and Army Corps sign-off unless an exemption fits.
  • Sanctuary review. NOAA says seawall work, docks and shoreline construction that could affect corals need sanctuary authorization. The application must include a benthic resource survey and the other agencies' approvals (NOAA).
  • City or county permit. City of Key West inside city limits; Monroe County for places like Key Haven.

We check the bottom in front of your wall before we design anything.

What Does Riprap Do for a Key West Seawall?

When waves hit a vertical wall, they bounce back down and dig at the base. That scour undermines the toe, and a wall that loses its toe starts to lean. A rock apron:

  • Soaks up wave energy before it reaches the wall
  • Shields the toe from scour
  • Reduces the load on the wall in storms
  • Adds habitat for small fish, crabs and other marine life in the gaps

Irma showed how much force the water can bring. In the lower Keys, the Hurricane Center measured 5 to 8 feet of water above ground between Cudjoe Key and Bahia Honda Key. Walls with an armored toe have a better chance of riding out a surge like that.

How Is Riprap Installed Here?

  1. Survey the bottom. We map depth, scour, and what's living there. This step is what sanctuary review depends on.
  2. Design the apron. We size the rock and slope for your exposure and keep the footprint as small as the job allows.
  3. Lay filter fabric. Geotextile keeps the fill under the rock from washing out.
  4. Place the rock. Stones go in by hand-guided machine, not dumped, so the slope interlocks.
  5. Turbidity control. We contain stirred-up sediment during placement.
  6. Final check against the permit drawings.

Residential installs usually take several days once permits are in hand. Work from the water keeps heavy equipment off your yard where access allows.

How Much Does Riprap Cost in Key West?

Riprap installation in Key West typically costs $125โ€“$350 per linear foot. A standard 75-foot residential installation runs $10,000โ€“$25,000, fully installed and permitted. Rock size, water access and survey needs affect the final number.

Should Riprap Be Part of a Bigger Seawall Job?

Often it should. If your wall is being replaced or reinforced, adding toe rock at the same time means one mobilization and one round of permits. See bulkhead replacement in Key West or seawall reinforcement in Key West. If you already have a sloped rock shoreline rather than a vertical wall, see revetment maintenance in Key West. Riprap Installation FAQs: Key West

Does the marine sanctuary allow riprap in front of my wall?

It can, but if the work could affect corals, you'll need NOAA authorization along with state and federal permits. A bottom survey is part of that.

Will riprap hurt the seagrass in my canal?

We survey first and keep the footprint tight. The permitting agencies review impacts to bottom habitat before approving the work.

How far out does the rock extend?

That depends on water depth and slope. We design it so boat access to your dock and lift stays workable.

Is riprap worth it on a sheltered canal?

Maybe not. On calm interior canals, scour is often mild. Open-water frontage and walls with a scoured toe benefit most.
