Is Your Hilton Head Bulkhead Repairable?

In most cases, yes. Before anything else, we want to know two things: whether the wall has begun to rotate, and whether the sheeting still holds together. If it's plumb and solid, repair is almost always the answer.

The ideal time to look is a low tide on a calm day. Watch for:

  • Sunken spots in the grass a few feet back from the cap
  • A silty plume drifting off the wall base as the water drops
  • Seams you can see through
  • Soft or split timber near the waterline
  • Rust streaks below bolts and rods
  • A widening gap where your deck or dock ramp meets the cap

Several of these on a wall that isn't leaning point to repair. If it's tipping or has holes through it, see bulkhead replacement on Hilton Head.

Why Do Hilton Head Bulkheads Leak?

Some of the biggest tides on the island are on Broad Creek. NOAA's Broad Creek station shows a mean tidal range of almost 7.5 feet, with a daily swing over 8 feet between higher high and lower low water (NOAA datums, Broad Creek). Skull Creek runs a little under 7 feet. That much water flooding and draining against a wall twice a day finds every weak seam.

Lagoons behave differently. Some island communities are built around tidal lagoons. Palmetto Dunes, for example, has an 11-mile lagoon system whose water levels are periodically lowered to flush it (Palmetto Dunes POA). When the water drops quickly on one side of a wall, soaked soil behind it pushes out and carries fines through any open seam.

Soft ground at the edge. Many creek-front lots grade into pluff mud, which gives little support at the toe and lets voids spread.

How We Repair Bulkheads on Hilton Head

Polyurethane void fill

We drill small ports along the cap and inject NCFI marine-grade foam into the hollows. It fills the voids, stabilizes loose soil, and seals seams from behind, without trenching through your landscaping. Learn about polyurethane injection.

Board and cap repairs

We replace failed boards and hardware on otherwise sound timber walls and re-form cracked cap sections.

Drainage

Water that can't escape builds pressure on the wall. Relief drains relieve it.

Who Regulates Bulkhead Work on Hilton Head?

Tidal creeks, marshes, and the sounds around the island are part of South Carolina's critical area, regulated by the SC Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) Bureau of Coastal Management. SCDES took over DHEC's coastal programs in July 2024. It notes that work qualifying as normal maintenance and repair may not need a critical area permit, while larger structural changes can. The Town of Hilton Head Island and your community's architectural review board may have their own requirements. We check all of it before scheduling.

How Much Does Bulkhead Repair Cost on Hilton Head?

Bulkhead repair in Hilton Head typically costs $80โ€“$250 per linear foot for void fill and $800โ€“$2,500 per tieback anchor. Most residential repairs run $4,000โ€“$20,000. A new wall usually costs several times that.

Bulkhead Repair FAQs: Hilton Head

My lagoon-front bulkhead leaks after the lagoon is drawn down. Why?

When the water level drops, the wet soil behind the wall pushes outward and water drains through open seams, carrying soil with it. Sealing the seams and filling the voids stops the loss.

Can you repair a bulkhead inside a gated community?

Yes. We coordinate access and any architectural review your community requires before work begins.

Does Broad Creek's tide make repairs harder?

It shapes the schedule more than the method. We plan work around low water so the base of the wall is exposed.

Do I need an SCDES permit to repair my bulkhead?

Normal maintenance and repair may not need one. Structural changes can. We confirm before we start.
