Replace a Hilton Head bulkhead when it has rotated too far to anchor, broken through, or rotted along most of its length. Vinyl or composite sheet pile holds up best for most creek and lagoon homes on the island.

If most of the wall is sound, start with bulkhead repair on Hilton Head.

| Material | Typical lifespan* | Advantages | Drawbacks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vinyl sheet pile | 40โ50+ yrs | Won't rot, rust, or host borers | Needs good anchors and cap |
| Composite (FRP) sheet pile | 50+ yrs | Stiff, long-lived | Higher initial cost |
| Treated timber | 15โ25 yrs | Natural look that suits many communities | Shorter life in salt water |
| Steel sheet pile | 25โ40 yrs in salt water | Heavy commercial loads | Needs corrosion protection |
| Precast concrete | 30โ50 yrs | Matching existing concrete walls | Heavy; seams need care |
*Lifespans vary with exposure, installation, and maintenance.
On tidal creeks with a 7-foot-plus range, sheet length matters as much as material. The wall has to hold when the creek drains to low water.
If your home sits inside a planned community, it may have its own design rules for waterfront structures. Some, like Palmetto Dunes, also manage their lagoons as a shared system. Before we order material, we confirm what your community allows for color, cap finish, and height, and we plan clean tie-ins to the walls on either side. A mismatch at a property line is where water tends to find its way behind a new wall.
South Carolina's critical area rules require bulkheads to conform to the critical area line where feasible. They can be built up to 18 inches from the existing escarpment. They're not allowed where marsh is already buffering erosion, unless upland is being lost to tidal erosion (SC Reg. 30-12).
On the oceanfront, the answer is simpler. No new erosion control structures are allowed on South Carolina beaches or in the beach/dune system (SCDES). The Town protects its beaches through renourishment instead, so our replacement work is on creeks, lagoons, and sound-side banks.
Starting in winter or early spring helps you avoid the post-storm rush.
Bulkhead replacement in Hilton Head typically costs $250โ$600 per linear foot for a full replacement. A 75-foot residential vinyl sheet pile replacement typically runs $20,000โ$45,000. Wall height, sheet length, access from land or water, and community requirements affect the total.

No. South Carolina doesn't allow new erosion control structures on the beach or in the beach/dune system. The Town maintains its beaches through periodic renourishment.
Many planned communities review waterfront work. We gather what they need along with the state application.
For most homes, vinyl or composite sheet pile. Both resist rot and borers, and they hold up well to large tides.
Often, yes, as long as the rest is sound and the new section ties in cleanly.
