Neptune Beach is small and mostly water. The census measures the city at 6.85 square miles, and 4.51 of them, about 66 percent, are water. It broke away from Jacksonville Beach in 1931 after a tax revolt. When Duval County merged with Jacksonville in 1968, Neptune Beach kept its own city government.
