Darien is one of Georgia's oldest waterfront towns. Scottish Highlanders founded it in January 1736 as New Inverness, at the mouth of the Altamaha River. Union troops burned much of it on June 11, 1863. Into the early 1900s it was one of the Southeast's biggest lumber ports. When the timber ran out, Darien became a fishing village known for Georgia wild shrimp. How Big Is the Tide on the Darien River?

Large. NOAA runs a tide station on the Darien River and predicts it from the Fort Pulaski gauge at the mouth of the Savannah River. Darien's high and low tides run about 6 percent higher than Fort Pulaski's, where the average range is 6.92 feet. The Georgia DNR notes that tides in the state's marshes average about 6½ feet and top 10 feet on spring tides.

Who Approves Bulkhead Work in Darien?

State: The Georgia DNR Coastal Resources Division (CRD) says you need a permit to put a bulkhead or riprap on any tidally influenced creek or river bank.
