Sea Island is a private, gated island in Glynn County. Since 2016 it has been owned by the Anschutz Corporation through the Broadmoor-Sea Island Company. It's reached by causeway from St. Simons Island. The Cloister resort sits on the island's southwest side along the Black Banks River. The 2010 census counted about 500 single-family homes. With so few homes and so much shoreline, each wall matters. Sea Island is about three miles from our St. Simons Island seawall repair team, which handles its scheduling and Glynn County coordination.
Through big projects under Georgia's Shore Protection Act. In 2018 the state reviewed an application to place at least 1,315,000 cubic yards of sand. The work would run about 16,000 feet from the south end near the Reserve north to the existing north groin. It included building a dune no higher than 12 feet NAVD. The notice also refers to an existing rock revetment along the beach. A groin on the island's south end was authorized under SPA Permit #438 in December 2015.
Georgia law sets a high bar for this kind of work. The Shore Protection Act allows hard stabilization only where no reasonable or viable alternative exists. It prefers beach renourishment, and where structures are needed, it calls for low-sloping porous rock or other energy-dissipating designs.
A big tide. NOAA's St. Simons Island station, the nearest long-term gauge, lists a mean range of 6.62 feet and a daily range of about 7.2 feet. Riverfront and marsh-edge walls face that swing twice a day.
Storms raise the stakes. During Hurricane Irma in 2017, water at the St. Simons Pier rose 6.9 feet above mean high tide, a local record. The F.J. Torras Causeway went underwater. Glynn County's emergency director said a nor'easter held water in the marshes.
Most work stays on the land side, which keeps it out of the marsh and away from neighbors' landscaping.

State. Georgia DNR's Coastal Resources Division requires a permit for a bulkhead or riprap on any tidally influenced creek or river bank. It asks owners to check with it before maintaining an existing structure. Beach and dune areas fall under the Shore Protection Act instead.
