Replace a Jacksonville bulkhead when it's broken through, leaning past the point anchors can fix, or failing along much of its length. For most river and creek homes, vinyl or composite sheet pile with a concrete cap is the best long-term choice.

Older riverfront neighborhoods have some of the oldest walls in town. Ortega sits on a peninsula between the St. Johns and the Ortega River, and its Venetia section dates to 1925 (Wikipedia). Walls in areas like that have often been patched more than once. If yours can still be saved, we'll say so. See bulkhead repair in Jacksonville.

For most Jacksonville homes we recommend vinyl or composite with a poured concrete cap. Salinity in parts of the lower St. Johns is rising, the UNF State of the River report says, and neither material rusts.
This is worth thinking through. Irma pushed the St. Johns downtown to 5.57 feet on September 11, 2017, flooding homes in San Marco (News4Jax). NOAA's Mayport gauge also shows sea level rising about 1.15 inches per decade since 1928. We work with your surveyor and engineer on a cap height that fits your lot and ties in cleanly to your neighbors' walls. A cap that's much higher than next door needs a planned transition so water doesn't just go around the end.
Often. Florida law exempts rebuilding a seawall at its old location, upland of it, or within 18 inches waterward of it from a separate state environmental permit (Fla. Stat. 403.813). Setting new sheet pile just in front of the old wall can reduce digging and leave the old wall as backing. You still need a City of Jacksonville building permit.
Full replacement in Jacksonville generally runs $250โ$600 per linear foot. A 75-foot residential vinyl sheet pile replacement typically comes to $20,000โ$45,000. Height, material, and land or water access set the final number. Our Florida seawall cost guide goes deeper.

If new leaks keep showing up in different spots, replacement usually costs less over time. We'll compare both honestly.
It can be designed, but the ends need a proper transition so flood water doesn't wrap around. We plan that before ordering material.
If it's within 18 inches waterward of the old wall, Florida law exempts the restoration from a separate state environmental permit. Local building permits still apply.
Construction on a typical home wall takes about 1โ3 weeks. Engineering and permits take longer than the build.
