Madeira Beach is a barrier-island city with the Gulf to the southwest, Boca Ciega Bay to the northeast, and John's Pass on its south end, the inlet carved by a hurricane in September 1848 that separates it from Treasure Island. Much of the bay-side land is newer than it looks: dredging along the causeway greatly expanded Madeira Beach's land area in the 1950s and 1960s. The aftermath was slow too. In November 2024, local officials said Madeira Beach was the only beach city that had started sending substantial damage letters, with about seven out at that point.
