Seawall Repair in Indian Harbour Beach, FL

Indian Harbour Beach was founded in 1955 by three developers and sits between Indialantic and Satellite Beach on the barrier island. It's a small city, 2.67 square miles, and more than a fifth of that, 0.58 square miles, is water. Most of that water is in the residential canals that run off the Banana River. Manatees are a regular sight in those canals and the river. That's a reminder that the canals are real lagoon habitat, not just drainage ditches, and it shapes how repairs are planned.

What Goes Wrong With Canal Walls Here?

• Wind tides, not lunar tides. The St. Johns River Water Management District says lagoon water moves more with the wind than the tide. A few days of steady wind can raise canal levels, saturate the soil behind the wall, and then pull it out through any open seam as the water drops.
• Storm surge on the ocean side. Space Coast Living reports that recent hurricane surge destroyed one of the city's beach access crossovers. Hurricane Matthew in 2016 left 11 Brevard homes destroyed and 140 with major damage, according to the National Hurricane Center. Big storms bring heavy rain and high lagoon water that load canal walls too.
• Old seals and tie rods. Joint seals and steel hardware wear out over the decades.

The first signs are usually a soft spot near the cap, cloudy water at the base after the water drops, or a crack along the cap.

Which Repairs Make Sense?

Who Permits a Seawall Repair in Indian Harbour Beach?

Start with the city's Building Department, which issues permits for work inside city limits. Under Florida Statute 403.813, seawalls in artificially created waterways are exempt from a separate Chapter 403 permit as long as they don't harm water quality, navigation, or flood control, and restoring a wall within 18 inches waterward of its old line is exempt too. FWC's Brevard manatee rules set boat speed zones on the Banana River and canals. We handle the filing.

Can You Work Without Disturbing Manatees?

Most of our repair work happens from the yard, not the water. Foam injection is done through ports in the cap, so there's usually little or no in-water work. When a barge or boat is needed, we follow the posted manatee speed zones and keep a lookout.
