Seawall Repair in Indialantic, FL

Indialantic's name says it all. The town sits between the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic, and it was incorporated in 1952 as "Indialantic-By-The-Sea." It's tiny, about 1.3 square miles, and right across the lagoon from downtown Melbourne. The 1985 causeway was built with elevated spans so boats on the Indian River could pass. The town came through Ian and Nicole without structural damage, but local officials say the lagoon-side areas around Miami Avenue and South Riverside are the most exposed to flooding over time. Those riverside lots are where most seawalls are.

How Does Indialantic Connect to Melbourne?

What Makes Indialantic Lagoon Walls Fail?

• Wind-driven water. The Indian River Lagoon averages about four feet deep and is pushed more by wind than tide, according to the St. Johns River Water Management District. Waves build across the open water and break on the wall face, while water levels rise and drop with the weather.
• Low ground. The town has called South Riverside and Miami Avenue its most vulnerable areas. Low yards stay wet longer after storms, so the soil behind the wall stays saturated longer.
• Wear at the toe. Lagoon waves work at the base of the wall. If the toe loses support, the wall begins to rotate.

Look for gaps under the cap, settlement in the yard, and any outward tilt at the top of the wall.

What Repairs Fit an Indialantic Wall?

Which Permits Apply in Indialantic?

The town's Building Department issues permits for work inside town limits. Florida Statute 403.813 exempts restoring a seawall at its previous location, upland of it, or within 18 inches waterward from a separate Chapter 403 environmental permit.
