Marine Construction in Punta Gorda, FL

Marine construction in Punta Gorda means building freestanding docks, lifts, and private seawalls that meet the City's Chapter 6 canal code, which sets tight limits on how far structures reach into the canals and bans anything attached to the City's seawalls.

How Far Can My Dock Extend?

Under Punta Gorda Code Ch. 6:

SituationLimit
PGI/BSI canal districtsFreestanding concrete dock, max 10 ft waterward of the seawall
Multi-family, 85+ ft of seawall, canal 120+ ft wideFinger docks up to 25 ft
Outside the districtsMax 10 ft from the mean high-water line
Charlotte Harbor or Peace River frontageTo 3 ft depth at MLLW, never over 80 ft
Side placementInside 45-degree structure limitation lines
Floating docksProhibited in residential canals

Which Other Canal Rules Affect My Design?

  • Nothing touches the seawall. Cleats, ladders, brackets, conduit, and similar items can't attach to or rest on the cap or panels. Docks, pilings, and lifts must be freestanding.
  • Tie-off anchors go at least 6 feet landward of the wall.
  • No overhead covers. Frames, roofs, and canopies over vessels, docks, or lifts are prohibited in the districts. Fitted covers attached to the boat itself are allowed.
  • Special permits. Anything not allowed by right needs a Canal Construction Special Permit, decided by the district's Canal Advisory Committee or City Council.

How Does Permitting Work?

  • City of Punta Gorda: a building permit for any dock, piling, seawall, bulkhead, or lift in the city's waterways.
  • Unincorporated Charlotte County: the county's permits, with signed and sealed plans for seawalls.
  • State and federal: Florida DEP and, where applicable, the Army Corps for harbor and navigable waters.

What Is Our Process?

  1. Site visit: frontage, water depth, limitation lines, existing structures
  2. Design: a layout that fits your boat inside the code limits
  3. Engineering and survey
  4. Permits: City or county, plus state and federal as needed
  5. Build: pilings first, then framing, deck, and lift
  6. Final inspection

If the City is scheduled to replace your district seawall, owners must clear docks and lifts from the work zone, and the district restores sod only. We can time dock removal and rebuilding around the City's schedule. For private walls, see bulkhead replacement in Punta Gorda.

Why Build for the Next Big Storm?

Punta Gorda has taken direct hits. Charley's eye passed over the city in 2004 and its eyewall devastated Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte (NHC Charley report). Ian made landfall near Punta Gorda in 2022, and Milton flooded the harbor in 2024. Docks and lifts here should be designed for wind, surge, and debris, on pilings that reach firm soil. Where the ground is soft, see marine foundation repair in Punta Gorda.

How Much Does Marine Construction Cost in Punta Gorda?

New docks in Punta Gorda typically cost $400โ€“$800 per linear foot, and new seawall or bulkhead construction runs $250โ€“$600 per linear foot. Lift size, piling depth, and access shape the total.

We also build in Cape Coral and Sarasota. See all our Punta Gorda seawall repair services, or contact us for a site visit.
