What Does Lee County Require for a Replacement Wall?

In unincorporated Lee County, the code sets clear conditions (Lee County Ord. 22-24):

On canals and other artificial waterbodies

  • The new wall must follow the existing or adjoining alignment and sit no more than one foot waterward of the old wall.
  • Silt fence or sod goes behind the cap until the backfill is stable.
  • Riprap along at least 50% of the new wall's length, at least 3 feet high off the bottom or up to mean high water, with an average stone size of 12 inches or more. It's waived where it would block boat tie-up areas.

On natural waterbodies such as the river

  • New or expanded seawalls are not allowed.
  • A lawfully existing wall may be replaced with the same type of structure, at the same size and location.

That means a riverfront owner can rebuild an existing wall but can't add new wall where there wasn't one. We design around these rules from day one.

What About Inside City Limits?

The City of Fort Myers checklist requires seawall construction documents from a Florida registered design professional, a site plan with property lines and waterway information, and an FDEP authorization letter (City of Fort Myers checklist).

How Long Will It Take?

  1. Inspection and estimate: first week
  2. Survey and sealed plans: a few weeks
  3. Permits: city or county, plus FDEP and federal where required
  4. Construction: often one to three weeks for a typical residential wall
  5. Final inspection

Lee County saw at least 52,514 structures affected by Ian, and contractor calendars stayed full long afterward. Booking before hurricane season helps.

What Does Replacement Cost in Fort Myers?

A full replacement typically costs $250โ€“$600 per linear foot. Replacing a 75-foot residential wall with vinyl sheet pile generally comes to $20,000โ€“$45,000. Required riprap, height, and access affect the price. See our Florida seawall cost guide. Where rock is required, we include riprap installation in Fort Myers in the quote.

We also replace walls in Cape Coral and Naples. See the full Fort Myers seawall repair page.
