Palm Harbor is an unincorporated community of Pinellas County with two very different waterfronts. On the west, it faces St. Joseph Sound and the Gulf; the larger of the town's early hotels, later Southern College, stood on a bluff overlooking Sutherland Bayou, and today H.S. "Pop" Stansell Park overlooks the sound. To the east lies Lake Tarpon, the largest freshwater lake in the county at roughly 2,500 acres, shared with Tarpon Springs. That means a Palm Harbor seawall might fight tides and surge, or a freshwater lake level, depending on the street. Lake Tarpon is a different animal. Pinellas County and the Southwest Florida Water Management District share responsibility for its health; the district handles vegetation control in the lake and its outfall canal. The lake's watershed takes in South Creek and Brooker Creek, its two largest tributaries.
One practical note for canal owners: the county says it no longer provides aquatic vegetation control in the Lake Tarpon canals unless plants are blocking drainage into the lake.
Freshwater walls don't corrode the way saltwater walls do. Their problems come from soil loss when the lake rises and falls, rain-soaked yards pushing outward, and vegetation along the toe.
The approach is similar on both waterfronts. When a wall is still straight, we inject polyurethane behind it to fill voids and seal joints from the land side, without excavation.
