Cherry Grove's canals make North Myrtle Beach unlike the rest of the Strand. In 2012 the South Carolina Supreme Court ruled that the state owns those canals, and the city has taken on dredging them. Its first major dredge ran from 2016 to 2017, paid for by assessments on about 700 properties. The canals reach the ocean through House Creek and Hog Inlet. When Hurricane Ian came ashore in 2022, the Hurricane Center named Cherry Grove among the hardest-hit places in South Carolina.

Dredging and depth changes. Deepening a canal changes how much soil sits in front of a wall's toe. Walls that relied on built-up sediment for support can start to lean after the bottom is lowered.
Soft ground. The marsh edges around Hog Inlet and House Creek are pluff mud, a fine, oxygen-poor mix of silt and decaying cordgrass that holds little at the base of a wall.
When a canal wall stands straight but the lawn is sinking behind it, polyurethane injection fills the voids and seals leaking seams through small holes in the cap. In early 2026 the Army Corps placed nearly 675,000 cubic yards along 8.29 miles of North Myrtle Beach.
