• The 8th Street Canal became a surge conduit. Water reversed up the tidal canal system and flooded areas north of US 98, even though the highway otherwise acted like a levee.
• The canal opening was wrecked. Riprap on the west side was pulled into the middle of the channel, riprap on the east side was lost or buried, and sand built a bridge across the opening. The canal had to be cleaned out and dredged.
• Bridges at Canal Parkway over Salt Creek and US 98 at the 8th Street Canal were impassable after the storm.
