Hollywood's waterfront was engineered on purpose. In the 1920s, while the city was being cleared and graded, two yacht basins were dredged and connected to the Intracoastal. They were designed by General George Washington Goethals, the chief engineer of the Panama Canal. A century later, the area around North and South Lake is where the city fights king tides. In late September 2026, Hollywood covered all 20 openings in a new public seawall along North and South Lake Drives. CBS Miami reported that during a high tide in late September 2026, water poured through gaps in the new seawall onto North Lake Drive. Two days later, once all 20 openings were covered, the wall kept Intracoastal floodwater off the streets. The station noted that seawater can still push up through storm drains. Local reporting during the county's 2020 rulemaking had already listed Hollywood among the cities seeing frequent tidal overtopping.
