How Does the Tide Shape a Brunswick Dock?

With about 7.7 feet between mean higher high water and mean lower low water at the Howe Street Pier gauge, a lot changes between tides. Many Brunswick lots need a long fixed walkway across the marsh to reach water deep enough at low tide, then a gangway down to a floating dock that rises and falls. Gangway length and slope have to work at dead low tide, not just at high water. Pilings need enough embedment to hold in soft marsh sediment.

Current matters too. On the East River, the Turtle River and the bigger tidal creeks, water runs hard on both the flood and the ebb. Floating docks need pilings and hardware sized for that pull, plus storm surge on top. Irma put 3 to 5 feet of water above ground along the Georgia coast. Dock pilings should be tall enough that floats don't ride off the top in a surge like that.

What Is the Permitting Path?

  • State: CRD Revocable License or CMPA permit. Bulkheads and riprap on tidal banks need a CRD permit.
  • Local, inside city limits: City of Brunswick Planning, Development & Codes. Exterior changes in the Old Town Historic District need a Certificate of Appropriateness.
  • Local, outside the city: Glynn County.
  • Federal: Army Corps authorization where it applies.

We're licensed to perform marine construction in Georgia and South Carolina and handle the permit coordination.

What Is the Build Process?

  1. Site visit: marsh line, creek depth at low tide, existing structures.
  2. Design: walkway, gangway and dock to current CRD guidance.
  3. Engineering: signed and sealed plans.
  4. Permits: state, local, and federal as needed.
  5. Build: timed to tides, often from the water on marsh lots to limit marsh disturbance.
  6. Final inspection.

How Much Does Marine Construction Cost in Brunswick?

Marine construction in Brunswick typically costs $400โ€“$800 per linear foot for new dock construction and $250โ€“$600 per linear foot for new seawall or bulkhead construction. Walkway length across the marsh, piling depth and water access have the biggest effect.

Marine Construction FAQs: Brunswick

Who approves a private dock in Brunswick?

The Georgia DNR Coastal Resources Division issues a Revocable License for a private dock from your own parcel. Local permits also apply.

Are Georgia's dock rules changing?

Yes. CRD is adopting permanent private dock rules, with Board action expected in late October 2026. We design to the rules in effect when you apply.

Why does my dock need a floating section?

Brunswick's tides swing about 7.7 feet a day. A floating dock stays at water level, and the gangway handles the height change.

How long does a dock take to build?

Permitting usually takes longer than construction. Once approved, most residential docks take a few weeks, depending on walkway length.
