Boynton Beach sits at the southern tip of the Lake Worth Lagoon, right where the lagoon meets the ocean through the Boynton Inlet. That inlet, officially the South Lake Worth Inlet, is a man-made cut. Construction began in 1925 and finished in 1927, giving the south end of the lagoon its own path to the Atlantic, and Palm Beach County has maintained it since 1996. What Is the Boynton Beach Waterfront Like?

Most Boynton waterfront homes face one of two settings:

• The lagoon itself. Wide, open water on the south end of the Lake Worth Lagoon, with longer wind fetch and more boat traffic.
• Residential canals. Narrow, dead-end channels that branch off the Intracoastal and rise and fall with the tide.

The Boynton Inlet is small: about 130 feet wide and 6 to 12 feet deep. Like most inlets on Florida's east coast, it traps sand drifting south against its north jetty. Inside the lagoon, the bigger story for homeowners is that almost all of the shoreline is hardened. Bulkheads line most of it.

Why Do Boynton Beach Walls Fail?

On both the lagoon and the canals, we usually find some mix of:

• Soil loss through joints. Tides push water in and out of every gap and carry sand with it, which leads to soft spots and sinkholes behind the cap.
• Trapped rainwater. Summer storms soak the fill behind the wall. If weep holes are clogged, the pressure keeps pushing on the panels.
• Corroded tie-backs. On older walls, the steel rods that hold the wall back have rusted away, and the cap starts to lean.
• Cap cracking from wave impact on open-lagoon lots.

What Permits Apply in Boynton Beach?

The City of Boynton Beach requires a Building Division permit for any "development" in the FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area, and its code defines development to include the repair or replacement of structures. Most waterfront lots fall in that zone.

State rules matter more on the lagoon than on a man-made canal. Florida law exempts seawalls in artificially created waterways from a separate environmental permit in many cases, but it says that exemption doesn't cover vertical seawalls in estuaries or lagoons unless the work is inside an existing man-made canal already lined with vertical walls.
